"The Star Child" by Stephanie Keyes

This review brought to you by:  Pump Up Your Book

Genre:  Fiction/Paranormal
Ages:  Adult and Young Adults

The Book Summary:
Kellen St. James is just your average seventeen-year-old prodigy, but with a Yale degree, a photographic memory, and an addiction to everything 80s.
But what’s not so average about Kellen is the girl who’s been haunting his dreams for the last eleven years. When the sudden death of his grandmother takes him from the East Coast to the Irish Coast, he finds himself face to face with his own personal ghost and finds out that she’s just as real as he is. Plus she’s come spinning a tale about an ancient prophecy in which Kellen plays a key role.
Together they will travel through an underworld of faeries and demons, angels and gods, not to mention a really ticked off pack of wild dogs, all in order to save the world from darkness. But will they make it in time?

The Dame's Review:

This book was not what I'd hoped it would be when I first saw the write-up and cover.  I've come to really enjoy paranormal/fantasy books, and I'm a particular fan of anything having to do with aliens from outer space.  So, "Star Child" was a sure draw for me, but it didn't add up to the expectations I had.  It proved to be something different entirely.

Stephanie Keyes is a fairly good writer.  She kept my interest interest initially, and I was curious about her storyline and her characters who seemed to have a good start from the beginning.  But soon the dialog became stilted, and I lost interest in the story.  It was simply not an engaging or exciting book.  On whole, the characters were flat.

I'm sorry to say this is a book I can't recommend whole-heartedly for most of my readers.  But, I can say that those who enjoy a rather  surface tale about a spirit guide, faerie and not too appealing fantasy creatures might like this book.

For the past twelve years, Stephanie Keyes has worked full time as a Corporate Educator and Curriculum Designer. She holds a M.Ed. from Duquesne University and and a B.S. in Management information Systems from Robert Morris University. Stephanie is a clarinetist, saxophonist, and vocalist, and is always making music somewhere at sometime. She credits her loving husband of ten years and her two sons for the completion and publication of The Star Child

Cover Rating:
First look this is obviously a book having to do with a young man coming from the stars overlooking the earth which works well with the title.  The font looks appropriate, and it's appealing because it's not "too sweet."  It gives the appearance of something metallic or "spaceship-like."  I like that the author's name is clearly visible and the color is in tandem with the full cover impact.  The dark silhouette of the trees and the lighter colored, starry sky gives the impression of a spaceship landing...  Clear message of what this book entails.  I love the cover!  The only objection I would have is that the young man isn't really a "child," but is older.  But, that just tells me the story is about his coming of age.    Rating:  B+

Hi Deborah, I am a bit confused by this review. The one at the top is a two star, but the one at the bottom is a much better review. Not sure how you felt about it. I love that you did a cover review! It captured my attention, immediately. And I really like this blog hop book publicity tour. A lot of good information can be had from other perspectives--merely for the click of a mouse.

"Starchild" is a busy name for Scifi/fantasy books. At first I thought it might be an updated version of Frederik Pohl's old classics. :-) They were probably wonderful in their day, but being heavy on the Scifi, have become so technologically outdated.

Have a wonderful weekend.

Deb

Thanks for the heads up, Teresa! I often pre-write my reviews once I start a book before I finish it...this time I forgot to delete it before I wrote my final review!! I appreciate your reading and noticing. :} I guess I was trying to say I too thought the scify didn't really come thorugh. Deb
